The Third Critical Reflection: The Consequences of Power in Our Society

What is the motivation of a person to accumulate power in our society today? The ideology of power has a great deal of influence on the social, the political, and the cultural establishments of our civilisation. The ideology of power has several different meanings as a word in the human vocabulary. Power has the ability to have positive or negative influences on social change in the establishments of our society. There are paradoxes regarding the ideology of power in our culture. It is up to the individual to decide what do with his or her power in society. Certain individuals will use their power for good by creating organisations to provide financial assistance or medical aid to the poorest people on the planet. Some individuals will abuse their power in our society by oppressing the free will of individuals in a country. Anthonio Gramsci was an Italian philosopher in the 20th century. This philosopher lived under the brutal regime of Mussolini during World War II. Anthonio Gramsci opposed the ideology of fascism in his country so he was sentenced to death by the government of Mussolini in 1937 (Darryl Leroux, 2011).

Power can be concentrated within small groups of individuals who achieve it by personal gain either by accumulation of wealth by investments or by political affiliation with several different governments around the world. Some individuals have a great deal of persuasion with people in the government or companies in society. Power can only bring misery, fear, and corruption in a society where certain individuals abuse their power of authority. Humans have always been interested in accumulating power since the beginning of civilisation. This ideology of power always had a negative impact on other cultures. Most Western governments abuse their power by imposing their will on their subjects either in the form of religion or by political persecution in their colonies. The word power did not exist in the North American languages until the arrival of the Europeans to the New World (George Sioui, 1989). The Amerindians used to live in harmony with each other and with nature too. The arrival of the Europeans changed the political institutions of the Amerindian society in North America. The Europeans introduced the ideology of power in the North American vocabulary throughout the continent (George Sioui, 1989).

The ideology of power can be great motivation for positive change in a society today. Most people are tired of political persecution from dictatorship governments in their countries. Most people are demanding social changes from their government such as freedom of expression and democracy within their constitution. Most dictatorship governments do not last for very long in their country. Yet, power can bring an era of hope and prosperity to a democratic society. Power should be used to empower people to have free will and freedom of expression around the world. Power can be used for entertainment in our society as well. As a good example, Charles Chaplin is a famous British comedian who was making fun of Adolph Hitler in his movie “The Great Dictator”.
